A growing share of purchase research now begins with a question typed into an AI assistant rather than a search box. The assistant returns a short answer naming two or three companies. Everyone else is absent from the conversation.
For businesses in Pakistan, that shift arrives with an additional problem. Most have never checked whether they appear in those answers at all, because until recently there was no obvious way to look.
Three technical causes, all fixable
The first is crawler access. AI systems use their own crawlers, with names such as GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot, and these are separate from Google's. A website can welcome Google while blocking all of them, usually through a security plugin or a hosting default that nobody reviewed. Where that block exists, the AI system never reads the site, so it cannot mention the business.
The second is rendering. Many modern websites build their content in the visitor's browser using JavaScript. Human visitors see a complete page. AI crawlers that do not execute JavaScript receive a nearly empty document. The content exists, and the machine cannot see it.
The third is entity ambiguity. When a business lists a different phone number on its website than on its Google profile, or spells its address differently across directories, AI systems cannot confidently establish which details are correct. Faced with that uncertainty, they tend to name a competitor whose information is consistent.
Why the timing favours early movers
The discipline of optimising for AI answers is young. Nobody anywhere holds a decade of advantage in it.
That is unusual. In traditional search, competitive positions were established over years and are expensive to displace. In AI answers, most categories in Pakistan currently have no established occupant. The position is available at a fraction of what it will cost once several competitors are contesting it.
Checking without spending anything
DigiMSM, an Islamabad-based agency specialising in AI search visibility, publishes a set of free browser-based tools for these checks. They require no signup and run locally rather than sending data to a server.
The free tool suite includes checks for whether AI crawlers are blocked, whether page content survives without JavaScript, and what AI engines currently say about a given business.
The simplest starting point requires no tool at all. Open ChatGPT or Gemini, ask the question a customer would ask before choosing a company in your category, and read what comes back. If your business is not mentioned, that is the gap.
