0

Ender is the youngest of his Wiggin siblings. He is the protagonist of this science fiction. He is an intelligent and brilliant child of his family. He was called to study war at the Battle School. Ender is given command of the Dragon Army.

He is manipulated by the elder and he is talented enough to understand why he is being manipulated. This ‘why’ always works as a driving force for him. Leaders always work against a reason. They needed a purpose and so is the case with Ender.

Ender’s being, “Third” in the family helped him a lot in cultivating leadership and the characteristics of a good leader. He is always treated as an outsider, as a third child, he is not welcomed by all his family members except his elder sister. He knows what response is required when a boy like Stilson bully him,

Ender chooses love over violence to be a good commander. Unlike his brother he avoids ruthlessness, cruelty and torture towards others. He always feel remorse if some wrong is done mistakenly.

He is compassionate for others even for his opponents who make him a good leader as we see leaders are caring and affectionate. Being compassionate is his biggest trait; it helps him to build a good working relationship with his companions. This is the reason that he is not only tolerated but also binds him with people as commander. He doesn’t simply order his soldiers but he develops a respectful relationship with his soldiers. This is the reason they trust him as the commander just like a friend. This is a strong trait a successful leader requires.

A good leader always appreciates being in a support group. Colonel Graff uses Valentine to keep Ender under control which makes Ender emotionally mature and at the age of 09 he is given the rank of commander. It is mandatory for a good leader to be strong emotionally.

Then as a leader and commander, he keeps his army man in practice. He knows their activeness will pay him back. Furthermore, he trusts them a lot. As he believes, ‘"soldiers can sometimes make decisions that are smarter than the orders they've been given." That is the reason he sometimes allows their initiatives as well to be implemented. This trust bond relationship attracts his soldiers and they love him as commander.
