It is believed that archery is the oldest sport. Even before 1400 years ago Hazrat Mohammad

(Peace be upon Him) advised his people that

Teach your children swimming and archery

(Refer: Shu'ab Al-Iman, Hadith: 8297 and Fayd Al Qadir, Hadith: 5477 and 5478)

At the earliest, it was not supposed to be played as a sport but used for protection and hunting purposes. Now, it is also included in the Olympic Games. It became an Olympic sport in 1900.

After a break, it was again included in the Olympic Games in 1920.

The person who plays archery is called Archer and his feminine is Archeress. To play this sport you have to have an arrow, a bow, and a target. The bow is used to shoot arrows on target. One can play it without any age or gender limit. One may play it in different styles of his own choice like indoor archery, outdoor archery, field archery, sky archery.

Different types of bows are used in different types of archery like recurve bow, longbow, crossbow, compound bow. Recurve bow is the only type of bow that is allowed to be used in the Olympic Games.
